Seat Reservations

Trains in Britain do not require Seat Reservations. Services are often quite frequent on all lines except rural routes. With a BritRail Pass you have great flexibility at all times when choosing your itinerary! Touring Britain with any BritRail Pass is so easy!

Despite this, there are times when we do recommend reserving a seat in advance. During the ‘rush hours’ of course and if you are doing a long trip (e.g. London to Edinburgh) and when you know exactly the train you want to travel on. We also recommend seat reservations on Bank Holidays, Fridays and Sunday evenings can also be busier too. In addition, if you are traveling with other people and want to make sure you sit together, it is a good idea to reserve a seat in advance.
Reserve a seat.

Note: Many trains to not offer Seat Resevations (e.g. commuter, rural and regional services)

Note: Passengers who wish to upgrade a Standard Class BritRail Pass to First Class will need to pay the difference in excess between the Standard and First Class Ordinary Fare for the leg of the journey that has not been taken. This may be paid at the ticket office before boarding the train or to the ticket inspector on the train.

Please see our Terms and Conditions for Refund Rules regarding Rail Strikes.

We've purchased rail passes each time we went to UK (from US)for many visits now. We're seniors finally, so they were even cheaper this time! We arrived in Glasgow by plane and started using the rail pass that day. Went to Gourock by train then took a Ferry to Dunoon. Next day went to Edinburgh returning to Greenock that night. Off to London for several days and on the way back, went to Chester, York and Newcastle. Close to Newcastle, we visited Alnwick to see friends. Then on to the Borders for a couple of days and next, off to Carlisle for the day. Then back to Edinburgh ending the day from on a train from Glasgow to Greenock. A couple of days later we were off to the beautiful granite city of Aberdeen. Then north to Inverness. We wanted to go to Kyle of Lochalsh on the Isle of Skye, but could not get a hotel online. So back to Greenock via Glasgow. We took several local trips while in Greenock going to Greenock West and Fort Matilda but mostly from Greenock to Gourock. Next time, we will concentrate more on Northern Scotland and southern England. We visited family and friends at our leisure, otherwise we would have gone to many more destinations. We went to Paris for two days (separate from rail passes) but would love to have gone back to Portsmouth and Penzance. The passes are so easy to use, they save us a ton of money and there are hundreds of choices on where to go. The trains are very comfortable - you can spread out a newspaper on the table and the snacks and drinks were very fresh. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Thanks!

British rail was a pleasant experience. I have been on nicer trains....German trains are the best. The flexibility of use was a good choice. The British rail system is user friendly and the staff helpful. I met very nice Britons on board.

Great ExperienceDave ,GermanyNovember 14, 2016
Bought a Britrail pass for 4 days in a month and traveled up to the northern most tip of Scotland, down to London and back to the Midlands with it. I was accompanied by my 14 year daughter and she loved it. The most amazing day was walking around the coast by Thurso and then catching the 16:00 to Inverness, then directly on to the Calendonia Sleeper and we woke up in London at 8:00 am the next day. It was amazing that we had traveled almost the entire length of the country and still had lots of energy to walk around and enjoy the capital. Have decided to only use Britrail passes when visiting the UK in future. Leave the car at home.

free day pass save our dayemmanuel venturanza ,philippinesNovember 02, 2016
we bought a Britrail 15 day consecutive pass with a free day pass just enough for our 15 day trip to U.K. Our flight back to the Philippines was delayed for a day so our freeday pass save us from our evening trip back to Heathrow airport by Heathrow Express. We were also able to make a short trip to Windsor in the morning. All in all we had a great exprerience in U.K with a Britrail pass, covering more than 12 destinations, very scenic views from comfortable seats and on time trains departures and arrivals.

Best Deal We FoundDJ Barajas ,USAApril 22, 2016
We purchased the BritRail pass for our trip to 2015 Rugby World cup in the UK. It was awesome. We spent the extra for First Class passes and the trains were great the service was excellent. The Rugby Venues were all over the UK so we knew we would have to be on the move constantly and I didn't want to try driving on the "wrong side of the road" :-). ACPRail sent us the tickets and instructions for use to make the whole experience a delight. It was truly a Trip of a lifetime thanks to ACPrail. We are already looking at options for another trip in a couple years and I will be using ACPRail for ground transportation.

What a way to go!fFloyd Sandford ,United StatesOctober 13, 2014
On a recent 3-week visit to England I made very good use of my Britrail Flexipass. From London Heathrow to London to Redhill to Amberly to Great Malvern to Hereford and Ludlow to Lichfield to Chippenham to Taunton to Oxford over the 3 week period I was able to visit several beautiful gardens, 3 abbeys, 4 cathedrals, 5 museums, 2 National Trust facilities, several lovely villages with thatched roofs and 2 scenic areas (Malvern Hills and the Quantocks) where I did some all-day hiking. Whenever I visit the United Kingdom I always travel by train, the most convenient and relazing way to go.

Great Value and Easy to UseJohn Hall ,USASeptember 26, 2014
The All England 4 day Pass for myself which included free travel for my minor aged daughter was brilliant. We didn't have to book in advance, could travel anytime, and visited whichever towns our hearts desired. Given the regular price of English rail, this was by far the best value of our holiday.
