Trains in Britain do not require Seat Reservations. Services are often quite frequent on all lines except rural routes. With a BritRail Pass you have great flexibility at all times when choosing your itinerary! Touring Britain with any BritRail Pass is so easy!
Despite this, there are times when we do recommend reserving a seat in advance. During the ‘rush hours’ of course and if you are doing a long trip (e.g. London to Edinburgh) and when you know exactly the train you want to travel on. We also recommend seat reservations on Bank Holidays, Fridays and Sunday evenings can also be busier too. In addition, if you are traveling with other people and want to make sure you sit together, it is a good idea to reserve a seat in advance.
Reserve a seat.
Note: Many trains to not offer Seat Resevations (e.g. commuter, rural and regional services)
Note: Passengers who wish to upgrade a Standard Class BritRail Pass to First Class will need to pay the difference in excess between the Standard and First Class Ordinary Fare for the leg of the journey that has not been taken. This may be paid at the ticket office before boarding the train or to the ticket inspector on the train.
Please see our Terms and Conditions for Refund Rules regarding Rail Strikes.
repeat travellerRoger G Macmillan ,CanadaJanuary 21, 2013 I love the train journeys in the UK. I have used a senior pass for the past 4 years. The trains are so frequent, are always on time, very comfortable and the personnel are so friendly. I especially like the food service on these journeys.
I will return as often as I am able.
Keep up the good work

Flexible, perfect fit for touristsShahriar Morshed ,BangladeshJanuary 21, 2013 There is probably no better way to see Britain's picturesque countryside than traveling though trains. Britrail pass gave me the opportunity to do so with absolute flexibility. I didn't have to worry about availability or price of the ticket nor about missing the train. There is always a next train and I can get on that one. This is a perfect fit for tourists.

The only way to explore the UKPatricia Kenber ,USAJanuary 21, 2013 I visit the UK at least once a year to see family and friends and visit places I missed seeing when I lived there over 40 years ago. Trains take me city center to city center which makes it easy to connect with local transportation or be met by friends.
The pass provides great flexibility about when I travel - which day, which train. My various hosts really appreciate this and it comes in very handy when, as happened last summer, I needed to delay a journey a couple of days due to my next host's illness. Connecting to local trains is much easier because if the main train is early or late I can decide at the station what connection will work best.
The pass is good value. I get the Flex pass because I tend to stay a few days here and a few there. I sometimes book seats if I am traveling on a busy day but usually not. I cover a great part of the country visiting my scattered friends and with the pass I do not have to worry about going when the trains are cheaper or committing myself to a particular train days or weeks ahead to get the best price.
Buying a pass is very efficient. The instructions are clear and the pass arrives with great speed.
Britrail Flexipass - a must for UK travel.

Thoroughy enjoyableEllen Russell-Deeble ,CanadaJanuary 21, 2013 We used Brit Rail to complete returns trips between London and Fife and also between Fife and Inverness. We had a wonderful time on each of our excursions. We enjoyed that fact that the train schedules are very convenient and the timetables are flexible enough that we could plan our trips to suit our own schedule. Being able to journey in comfoirt and watch the scenery instead of the motorways, made our travels fairly stress-free. The trains were clean, comfortable and almost always on time. We found the high speed trains to be a great way to cover long distances. |
Best decision we made!Caroline Greer ,New ZealandJanuary 21, 2013 My husband and I were debating wether to hire a car to travel around the UK or o buy a flexi rail pass. We decided on the rail pass and it was the best decision we made. We chose a 3 day consecutive pass and managed to travel from London to Liverpool, Edinburgh, York and return to London. It is amazing to be able to book this and accommodation from NZ and arrive in the UK all set to go! We had previously looked at train times etc. however we found that if we were ready to move on earlier then there was always a train at the station and as we had the flexi pass we could just hop on. It was also so much more pleasant to be able to sit and enjoy a cup of tea (or Beer) on the train than to have to face traffic queues on the motorways, if we had chosen to hire a car. I would definitely purchase rail pass again. |
Britrail 1st ClassRod Leschasin ,CanadaJanuary 21, 2013 This is from my trip in April & May, 2012.I really appreciated the network & convenient times. Travel was quite comfortable and the staff were very helpful & pleasant. Only quibble: breakfast offered was "hit and miss". London to Newcastle: full breakfast menu. Newcastle to Salisbury: only a bacon roll with beverages.
Salisbury to Gatwick Airport: nothing except coffee, when I really needed a breakfast
Thank you,
Rod Leschasin |
Would do it againPhil Robbie ,CanadaJanuary 21, 2013 My daughter and I travelled from London to Bath, Exeter, Barnstaple and then to York, Harrowgate and finally to Edinburgh, Bathgate, and Glasgow. All of it was a good experience except the ride where we had to sit on the floor. We discovered that we should have made reservations for that particular train. We didn't make that mistake twice. The pass was very useful but it didn't offer us the exact setup that we needed. The pass was for a certain number of days within 2 months but we needed just one more day. The bump up to the next category made it too expensive compared to booking individual trains. A pass with a choice of number of days would be useful.

No ProblemsBert Scholz ,GermanyJanuary 21, 2013 I have bought an ACP Rail Pass last for autumn 2012; shipping fee was a litle bit nasty, but delivery, activcation in the country and travelling was no problem, just like a regular ticket you always carry with you. |
