Seat Reservations

Trains in Britain do not require Seat Reservations. Services are often quite frequent on all lines except rural routes. With a BritRail Pass you have great flexibility at all times when choosing your itinerary! Touring Britain with any BritRail Pass is so easy!

Despite this, there are times when we do recommend reserving a seat in advance. During the ‘rush hours’ of course and if you are doing a long trip (e.g. London to Edinburgh) and when you know exactly the train you want to travel on. We also recommend seat reservations on Bank Holidays, Fridays and Sunday evenings can also be busier too. In addition, if you are traveling with other people and want to make sure you sit together, it is a good idea to reserve a seat in advance.
Reserve a seat.

Note: Many trains to not offer Seat Resevations (e.g. commuter, rural and regional services)

Note: Passengers who wish to upgrade a Standard Class BritRail Pass to First Class will need to pay the difference in excess between the Standard and First Class Ordinary Fare for the leg of the journey that has not been taken. This may be paid at the ticket office before boarding the train or to the ticket inspector on the train.

I have used these passes for about 10 years, and I love them!. Although a bit expensive, the service and train timetables are second to none, I always get a 1st class ticket and find them excellent. The service on the trains is really good, from the British breakfasts to the always available food trolleys. I will use them again!

Enjoyed the travels - especially having wifi on most trains. Appreciated the back-up shuttle service when one train was cancelled as we returned from the Orkney Islands. Instructions of what cars to board were vague/confusing leaving Windermere for London; I did not have reserved seats and it was not clear which cars to board. Overall I would do it again.

The purchase of my ticket was easy. The cost compared to what it would cost me on the day is more than satisfactory. The amount of days in a month usage is still a problem with me, as I am obliged to buy what is offered buy the vendor, not what I need. I only used the train 6 days in the month (and given an extra travel day) but was obliged to buy an 8-day Britrail Flexi-Pass. The trains were okay comfort wise, and also on time. However, when they offer lame excuses because there is no food trolley today, and have reduced food on board, it becomes quite frustrating and bloody annoying the more times it happens! I will use the service again as it suits my travel needs when visiting relatives in the UK. John C.

Cannot say enough about the convenience of the BritRail Pass. I used it from September 20 to October 10, 2017 taking a tour of the UK starting in London, then down to Brighton, Bath, and visiting numbers cities up the west coast to Glasgow and then to Edinburgh, down to Berwick, York and finally where I staged myself at an airport hotel and took day trips until I left. I opted for a 1st class consecutive pass and was was glad I did. Early morning trains were met with coffee and in some instances a hot breakfast. On any trip it was nice to relax with a soft drink, or perhaps a cocktail and lunch or snacks before carrying on. I would definitely recommend this form of travel to everyone. We found the station staff very friendly and helpful. My only wish was that the paper ticket could have been substituted for a regular train pass for easier usage, but that was a minor detail in a wonderful trip. I also must commend the rail service on it's cleanliness of bathrooms, whether in the station or on the train I was amazed how sanitary the facilities were.

Overall my BritRail pass (all of GB, 15 days) was great! Reasons for giving only 4 stars in some categories are: The packaging could be better (transparent plastic envelope for better usability during actual trip, alongside paper folder?). Finding someone to validate the pass at St. Pancras was inconvenient and time consuming. Not beeing able to use ticket-gateways without clerks' help was a tiny bit inconvenient too. The online travel diary form needs enhancement (app?). Online seat reservation was impossible (dead links) but making reservations at stations OK (and highly recommended for rides with full luggage, more or less required for at peak times). Some numbers and more good and bad things from my trip can be found in my BLog (sorry for 1990's style): http://www.ibcl.at/ibclweb/ibclweb?page=ShowBLogArticle&service=external&sp=l206

I used a BritRail Flexi Pass to explore Northern England and Scotland recently. The advantage of the Flexi Pass is that you can stay for about two weeks, travel by trains on 8 days and enjoy cities and places of entertainment for the time between travelling. Trains in UK are rather comfortable, even in Standard Class, and a seat reservation is recommended only during peak time (early morning until 09:00 h) or on some preferred routes like TPE trains to and from Manchester Airport. For my next visit to UK I will certanly use a BritRail Pass again.

We used the 30 day consecutive pass and found it a good value and easy to use. It was accepted on all trains without question, we avoided ticket lines, just show your pass, board and go. So many trains to choose from with fast frequent service. Coming from the USA, the trains in Great Britain are a joy to use. One suggestion: seat reservations can be made at any staffed station for any train on the system. A small ticket is printed with the train and seat reservation and given to the rider. If you have a change of trains enroute, then two tickets are issued, one for each leg of the journey. It may be useful for you to ask the agent to pad the time between connections so as to not miss your connecting train. For example, we reserved seats from Leeds to Chester which involved a train change at Manchester with only 16 minutes to change trains at Manchester. Our train arrived Manchester 8 minutes late and we missed our connection. However, we were able to board another train to Chester 30 minutes later and our problem was solved. We travelled in August which is peak season. Some trains were full, but most trains we rode always seemed to have a few seats available.

Used the 8 days consecutive all-Great Britain pass: Absolutely fantastic. Stayed in Manchester and used the pass to travel to Liverpool, Derbyshire, York, Cardiff / Caerdydd, Glasgow, Blackpool and London. In total it cost me 4 eurocent per kilometre. Staff of all train operating companies were really nice and helpful. Definitely recommend and would love to do again. For up-to-date train information I recommend www.realtimetrains.co.uk. At terminal stations, trains are shown sooner on RTT than on the actual departure boards.
