Seat Reservations

Trains in Britain do not require Seat Reservations. Services are often quite frequent on all lines except rural routes. With a BritRail Pass you have great flexibility at all times when choosing your itinerary! Touring Britain with any BritRail Pass is so easy!

Despite this, there are times when we do recommend reserving a seat in advance. During the ‘rush hours’ of course and if you are doing a long trip (e.g. London to Edinburgh) and when you know exactly the train you want to travel on. We also recommend seat reservations on Bank Holidays, Fridays and Sunday evenings can also be busier too. In addition, if you are traveling with other people and want to make sure you sit together, it is a good idea to reserve a seat in advance.
Reserve a seat.

Note: Many trains to not offer Seat Resevations (e.g. commuter, rural and regional services)

Note: Passengers who wish to upgrade a Standard Class BritRail Pass to First Class will need to pay the difference in excess between the Standard and First Class Ordinary Fare for the leg of the journey that has not been taken. This may be paid at the ticket office before boarding the train or to the ticket inspector on the train.

Please see our Terms and Conditions for Refund Rules regarding Rail Strikes.

Brit Rail PassCathie Dunklee-Donnell ,CanadaJune 26, 2014
I liked how easy it was to get on the train and go quickly to my destination. However once I was on the train, I was never sure of what I was supposed to do and needed more guidance and help. When I tried to find a seat most were reserved, and it was hard to find one that was free. It seemed many of the reserved seats were never occupied for the whole of the trip, however. The toilets seemed to be locked or out of service and I couldn't find one to use. I wasn't sure where to put my luggage since the luggage storage areas were often too full. I also was confused if I were allowed to sit in first class and how to arrange to sit there. I wished there were more staff to help and tell you how things work and where to sit. For the amount of money I paid, there should be better service and at least people to answer questions. I liked looking out at the scenery.

So ConvenientKyra ,CanadaJune 26, 2014
Taking the train in the UK is generally expensive, but the pass did make it a bit cheaper. It was super convenient, you just show your pass and get on any train. I would definitely recommend the pass if you're taking many trains as it just makes it easier.

The Way to See Britainmary ,usaJune 26, 2014
My mom (mid-80's) and a friend and I traveled through Britain using the BritRail pass and it was a terrific way to see Britain. The trains are comfortable, very quiet and smooth. The customer service was excellent and we never had any problems except once at the first of our trip, when we were trying to get off at a small station and did not realize you needed to push a button to open the door. We couldn't get off! Nevertheless, the next stop was only a few minutes away. Before getting to Britain, I had been concerned about my mom (80's) getting to the platform, finding the right train/right car and getting on and off. Everything went well. The trains were perfectly on time and station staff was super at helping us find where we needed to be, advising us of how to find a seat (the one time we didn't have seat reservations). I do suggest seat reservations.

Mostly excellent experiencesW. Russell ,USAFebruary 19, 2014
I've been using Britrail Flexipasses for 8 or 9 years and find them useful but you have to use a bit of planning. I get the first class pass and is annoying using trains south and west of London that don't have first class but that's not the fault of Britrail. What I've started doing after almost missing a train once is to take my pass to a rail station on my first day in London to have it validated PLUS get reservations for my upcoming rail trips. The website charges you $12 per reservation but they're free at the stations. As early as possible is good but they can still be made up to one hour before the train leaves it's originating station. Highly recommended. I do not recommend the insurance as it doesn't help while you're overseas and is a lot of hassle for a partial refund.

Don't leave home for the UK without itJohn Grimley ,CanadaNovember 03, 2013
As an ex-Brit living in Canada, I often asked for advice when people plan to visit the UK. "We're going to rent a car at the airport and tour round for a week" is a common comment. In a word: don't. The idea of the one road that we know well in North America is virtually nonexistent in the UK. You'll spend an exasperating time in traffic jams, which are ubiquitous in Britain. Car rentals are pricey, especially for the size of car we are used to and gasoline is around double the price we pay. When in North America we think car or plane when it comes to travel. In Britain (and the rest of Europe) think train or plane. Forget the car. Take the train and get a chauffeur automatically. Trains over there are frequent, fast and very often friendly, as you have time to interact with other travelers. Lastly, by buying the right rail pass, before you leave home, means you can go anywhere the pass covers, at any time. It's a great feeling to know you have the country at your feet when holding a rail pass. If I am in the UK for more than a couple of days, I invariably buy a rail pass. ; it is an incredibly cost-effective and flexible way to get around. Here endeth the lesson.

Pleased with BritrailMarilyn ,AustraliaOctober 04, 2013
I purchased my Britrail South West Pass online and at the time also reserved my seats for the London-Penzance and later Penzance-London journeys. My journey to Penzance was on a Bank Holiday weekend so it was good that I had the seat reservation as the train was very crowded but pleasant. For the trip back to London 10 days later I chose the Quiet Carriage which was not such a good idea as it was anything but quiet, in fact I would say it was noisier than the crowded carriage on the earlier trip. Nothing was done about the noisy American women and their very noisy card games that continued through the whole trip. Some of us had asked staff to try and get these ladies to quieten down. Also there was a woman using a computer very noisily, even though the gentleman travelling opposite her had asked her to stop as it was interfering with his hearing aids. She did finally turn it off (and then admitted that she was an audiologist, to which he said that she should have known better). I used the third day of my Pass to travel to Bath and return. This was a really good experience and the service was great as well. I will purchase another Pass when visiting the UK next time.

Great DealHanna ,USASeptember 16, 2013
I got the 4 day flex pass for my UK trip to celebrate graduating college. It is a wonderful price if you are traveling long distances. My trip took me from Edinburgh to Norfolk and eventually back to Reading, and those 2 days alone paid for my train tickets. I never had to worry about the right ticket to buy, I just hopped on the train I needed, sat in any unreserved seat, and went to my destination. And if you ever are worried about not having a seat, you can go to any ticket window and they can reserve one for you for any train on any day. It was the best idea for my trip which I was trying to keep flexible. I will do this every time I go to England and I'm telling all my friends about it.

the best wayBarbara Guay ,CanadaSeptember 10, 2013
I cannot imagine that my daughter and I would have covered so much country with such ease by any other means. The flexi-pass gave us great freedom and allowed us to relax between destinations. I would recommend reserving seats on some of the busier routes as it did take time to find seating.

3 issues with the passGrant Beattie ,CanadaSeptember 10, 2013
3 issues with the pass - 1. UK trains are busy! Do not assume seats are available especially traveling as a family (4 people); the idea of "wait for the next one" (advice in our Brit Rail package) doesn't really work when trains are an hour apart or more. It's a very good idea to reserve, especially on the long hauls 2. Many of the big stations (e.g. Reading) now use entry and exit gates that require either tickets or fare cards to feed into the gate - you need an attendant to open the gates for you when you're using a rail pass 3. We had a bad delay on the Edinburgh to London train - over 1 1/2 hrs late. People who purchased tickets got a full refund. We didn't have any recourse. One comment about British Rail - on both outbound and return on the London-Edinburgh train (East Coast line) there were certain cars with no air conditioning! These are 5-hour+ trains! Very uncomfortable in August.
