Seat Reservations


Europe train tickets Eurail Passes are generally enough to hop on and off trains throughout Europe, especially as seat reservations are not usually necessary for local or regional trains. However there are certain countries, trains and occasions where seat reservations are necessary in addition to your Eurail Pass.

It will be indicated when you check timetables if a train is subject to compulsory reservation. When a seat reservation or supplement is required, the cost is not included in the Eurail Pass and varies depending on the country, type of train and date of purchase/travel.

Here are some examples of when a seat reservation is usually required:
  • Most international long-distance trains.
  • Select domestic high-speed trains.
  • Night trains always require a supplement for sleeping accommodation.
  • On some trains (such as French TGV and Thalys trains), the number of seats for Eurail Pass holders are limited. Therefore, you should reserve these trains in advance, especially in high-season.
  • It is recommended that you make reservations during peak travel periods and if you must reach your destination at a specific time.
When you're ready to book a seat reservation follow these easy steps:
  1. Click on "Reserve Seats".
  2. Identify the train stations for your chosen route (please note that some cities have more than one train station).
  3. Select your travel date and other passenger details.
  4. Choose your itinerary from the timetables displayed and select your fare 'reservation for Eurail pass holders'.
  5. Make all necessary seat reservations in advance and receive them by mail prior to departure.
  6. With your Eurail Pass and seat reservations in hand, enjoy hassle-free travel throughout Europe!

Pass holders are able to board most regional and intercity trains, however in some countries, especially in France, Italy and Spain, a seat reservation may be required. Please note that a pass does not guarantee a seat. A seat reservation or supplemental ticket is also required for high-speed trains and overnight trains.

When purchasing a sleeper supplement for travel in 3-berth or 4-berth compartments, a 2nd class ticket is needed. A 1st class ticket is needed to purchase a 1-berth sleeper supplement. When purchasing a sleeper supplement for travel in 2-berth compartment a 2nd or 1st class ticket is needed depending on the country.

  • AVE
    The AVE is the high-speed train service in Spain, linking major cities with Madrid.
  • Cisalpino
    The Cisaplino Train covers Switzerland, and Italy, taking you from city center to city center at high speed.
  • EuroCity
    EuroCity replaces the older Trans Europe Express name for high speed border-crossing trains in Europe.
  • Eurostar-1
    Eurostar is the high-speed passenger train operating between the UK and Europe. Popular routes run from London to Paris and London to Brussels.
  • ICE
    The Deutsche Bahn ICE train connects all the major German cities such as Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, Cologne, and Berlin.
  • InterCity
    Express or inter-urban trains with limited stops and comfortable carriages to serve long distance travel.
  • InterCityLyn
    InterCityLyn is a fast train with fewer stops in Scandinavia.
  • Night
    A night train in Europe departs well before midnight and arrives in the morning. Night trains have sleepers and couchettes.
  • Regional
    Regional rail usually provides rail services between towns and cities, with stops at most or all stations.
  • Regular
    A regular train can be selected when it is not a night train or specialty high speed train.
  • TGV
    TGV high speed trains is the fastest way to travel around France, and beyond into Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany & Italy.
  • Thalys
